A recent report by the independant charity the Food Farming and Countryside Commission has revealed a staggering reality: the current food ecosystem is costing the UK economy an estimated £268 billion annually. This figure includes the combined costs of healthcare (£67.5bn), social care (£14.3bn), welfare (£10.1bn), productivity losses (£116.4bn), and the human cost (£60bn) of chronic diseases linked to our diets.
Linked to this is the work of Professor Michael Crawford who outlines in his book "The Shrinking Brain" and Patrick Holford’s book, Upgrade Your Brain: Unlock Your Life’s Full Potential. Both highlight how our modern diets are “dumbing down” future generations. Key nutrients like Omega-3 (DHA/EPA), Vitamin B12, and other micronutrients crucial for brain health are often lacking in today's diets.
While this might seem overwhelming, there’s hope. Affordable and accessible solutions exist that can transform your health. Sadly, these solutions—like natural, whole foods—are rarely promoted. Why? They can’t be trademarked, meaning there’s little incentive for big food companies to push them.
From my experience with Blue Zones research and holistic health practices, the key pillars of health are mind, body, and community. Together, they support both metabolic and mental well-being. Here are some simple, actionable steps you can take today:
🍎 Eat whole foods and avoid hyper-processed products.
🚫 Cut back on sugar, especially fructose, which is a major contributor to chronic illnesses.
🤝 Engage with your community—join a local club or group, cook a meal for friends and family, and build connections to reduce stress and boost your sense of belonging.
Let’s shift from being mere consumers to active citizens of health and wellness. Everyone’s journey is unique, and I’d love to hear how you’re making changes to enhance your well-being. 🌟
